Every donation counts in our campaign to elect Ken Rice. Your contribution will help me reach out to the community and have the opportunity to be seated on City Council representing the Second Ward. Together, we can make a difference by bringing Transparency/Integrity, Public Safety & your view within our neighborhoods
To begin with, my wife and I truly fell in love with Columbia, its people, caring nature, and the beautiful parks and trail systems throughout the city and surrounding when we moved here almost four years ago as our permanent home. We also love how the Second Ward encompasses all that is best of the city, and we feel truly blessed to call this our home.
I was raised as the adopted and only child of a dedicated homemaker and a proud 30-year union aircraft mechanic (AFL-CIO). In school, I was often seen as a troublemaker until I was diagnosed with ADHD, which has been both a challenge and a motivator in my life.
After graduating high school in New York, I attended St. Petersburg College and Florida State University, where I studied Journalism. I then proudly served my country as a US Army veteran, first as a Forward Observer with the 25th Infantry Division – Tropic Lightning, and later as a Nuclear, Biological & Chemical Non-Commissioned Officer during the Gulf War in
Saudi Arabia.
My career spans over 35 years in the restaurant industry, 25 of which in ownership or executive level positions. I currently serve as the Chief Operating Officer of Pickelman’s Franchising LLC, a gourmet sandwich chain that began right here in Columbia in 2005. We now have 33 restaurants across eight Midwest states and are actively expanding nationwide.
My wife Rebecca and I have been happily married for almost 17 years. We have a blended family of five children—three girls and two boys, including one I adopted.
Our family is incredibly diverse, and we’ve grown closer through our shared differences and challenges. I personally understand the struggles of ADHD, and we also navigate my wife's Multiple Sclerosis (MS). My mother, who lives with us since my dad passed away, has severe dementia, which led my wife to leave her IT career to become her full-time caregiver. Our son Brandon, who has high-functioning autism, is now a successful Assistant General Manager at our downtown Pickelman’s restaurant, which makes me incredibly proud.
For over nine years, I served on the executive committee and board of Spaulding for Children (SFG), a Michigan-based non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of children in foster care through adoption services, family support, and advocacy. I'm also very involved in my local church, serving as the Sunday School Director, the head of the finance committee, and as a Deacon. Additionally, I am the Vice President of our Homeowners Association.
I believe these diverse experiences have shaped me into a leader who understands the importance of community, service, and resilience. ready to bring these qualities to the 2nd Ward council and serve you.
